Partial open opens too far

I read the other partial open posts. I tried moving magnet up as suggested in one post, for minimum magnet overlap but this made just a bit of difference, if any. Here is my issue: 

I bought this specifically so we can let our cat in/out. It needs to open about 5-6 inches.  Currently with the pulse set at 500 msec, the door open much longer in time, and is open 16 inches.  From a security perspective, anyone and any large animal can get past the door.  I want it to open for the cat, but exclude larger animals and humans.  If the door only opened for 500 mec, it would be about perfect.  I can do it from the wall button, so it is not a capability of the door.  Can you do a software update to allow a lower opening?  Thanks.

  If that doesn't work you can now get cat doors that are made specifically for use on garage doors.
