Will phone be able to open door with a dead battery?

I have read through quite a few of the forums and the FAQ's but not sure if I understand the vehicle sensor. Both my wife and I have iPhones so (I think) I know that we will need a vehicle sensor to be able to have the door open and close automatically. What is not clear is whether we will be able to open/close the door with the app from the vehicle is the sensor battery dies.

  My experience is if the vehicle sensor is shut off or the battery is dead you can still use the app to open or close the door. I have opened my door for someone while at a restaurant or setting on a beach with the app.
