Considering this. I don't want to use auto open/close at this point, but would like to have something appear (or be static) in Android Auto. I can't find a video or info on exactly how this is done.

  There is no setup required. Once you have the Tailwind app on your phone and you're logged into it, the first time you connect your phone to your car the Android Auto is picked up automatically. You'll see the Tailwind app appear in Android Auto. Tap on it to launch just like any other Android Auto app and you can control your doors from the infotainment screen in your vehicle.
