Yes you need to have your phone with you. All open / close commands come from your phone. The Tailwind app on your phone searches for an authorized BlueTooth device nearby (one that you authorize in the Tailwind app). If that Bluetooth device is detected, your phone is authorized to send auto-open / close commands.
If your vehicle does not have BlueTooth, you can use the Tailwind Vehicle Sensor instead.
Note: If you have an iPhone and you want auto-open, you need a vehicle sensor regardless of whether your vehicle has BlueTooth or not. This is a restriction by Apple, not Tailwind.
Think of it as 2 factor authentication for your garage door. It is a doorway into your house after all. This is a unique security feature of Tailwind's patented technology that no other solution on the market can offer. Any other solution that offers auto-open has the inherent security risk that if someone steals your phone all they need to do is take it to your house and your garage door will open for them. This is NOT the case with Tailwind.
In addition to this extra security with the auto-open feature, Tailwind also offers more convenience for families with multiple garage doors. For example, Tailwind can detect when you are driving your truck, your car, your Harley, ATV, etc. The more sensors, the more you can configure which garage door will open for each scenario, set the distance, and even configure them differently for each user. For example, my wife likes the door to open later as she arrives home. I prefer that it opens earlier. Tailwind lets us do that. Of course, if we are travelling together in the same vehicle, my phone is the one that triggers the auto-open because it sends the "open" command first. Her phone will also send the "open" command a few seconds later, but that command is simply ignored by the system because the door is already opening.
